Resta u ran t food accou n ted for 39 percent of U .S. meals bought in 1996, up from 26 percent in 1970. The department said in a report,“Away-From -Home Foods Increasingly Impor tant to Qua lity of American Diet.” “While the n utritiona lquality of foods consu med by America ns has improved overall, foods prepared at home are generally m uch more healthful than away-from -h ome foods ” the depa rtment said. “Despite n utri tional gains at home, Americans will find it difficult to im prove their diets beca use they purchase so many meals outside the h om e the study said. While the nu tritional con tent of food prepa red both at h ome and in resta u rants has improved in recent yea rs, food eaten out con tains more of the nutrients Americans typically eat too much of, including fat and the satura ted fat, and less of what is lacking from most d iets, such as calcium, fiber and iron. The department recommended n u trition education programs sh ould place more emphasis on teachin g U.S.cons u mers abou t how to order healthful meals when dining out.
